Unruled Masses Secures 501(c)(3) Status, Launching a People-First Organization for Democracy and Hope

Unruled Masses secures 501c3 status to defend democratic norms. We need your support!

For Immediate Release

New York, NY — [March 30, 2026]

NEW YORK, NY — Unruled Masses (UM), a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to public accountability and the defense of democracy, is proud to announce it has officially received 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. This March 9, 2026 landmark designation establishes Unruled Masses as a public charity, making all contributions tax-deductible and fueling a new era of civic-driven efforts to reclaim public institutions for the people.

As governments shift from protecting citizens to controlling them, Unruled Masses is stepping in to protect the public interest as an independent force for accountability.

“Hope lives in those who fight for a better tomorrow. And with our playbook, we are launching a reclamation project for those who demand to live in a democracy where institutions of power are accountable to the people,” said Nick Van Zandt, Executive Director of Unruled Masses and former U.S. Army intelligence officer.

Future donations will support a suite of strategic tools designed to confront the "capture" of public institutions through three core pillars:

  • The Abuse & Corruption Library: Our data science-powered engine that turns outrage into verified intelligence, covering everything from high-level political corruption to local issues.
  • The Nonviolent Action Playbook: A digital repository of hundreds of civic actions for people to engage in the defense of the rule of law safely and effectively.
  • The Civic Infrastructure Funnel: Utilizing the same tools as the Pentagon, we’re bridging the gap between digital awareness and real-world community building.

Co-founder, President of the Human Rights Research Center, and former USAID officer, Deanna Wilken, is excited about this achievement: “Our mission is to ensure that no one stands alone against corruption. We are transforming hopelessness into a tangible, strategic movement for dignity.”

Where traditional systems have failed to protect the public interest, UM stands as an independent force for accountability.
